LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
Hi All,
I’m pleased to report that I survived my week-long hike in Philmont, New Mexico. But it was a true adventure, complete with altitude sickness, hypothermia, and one man down.
Despite landing in Denver, Colorado and spending the weekend there before heading to Philmont, I still suffered from altitude sickness for the first two days of the hike. Lack of sleep surely didn’t help; going cold turkey on caffeine likely added to the stress. After the first two days of struggling, I finally acclimated.
But by day 3 we were hit by a hailstorm. I’ve never been out in a hailstorm where the hail was large enough to hurt; poor planning on my part (and listening to a Ranger who declared I didn’t need rain pants or a spare pair of pants) led to a futile effort to put up our camp in the storm before we had to give up and run to the nearest shelter. I was soaked to the bone, and the relentless mountain winds caused me to shiver uncontrollably to the point that I couldn’t feed myself. I thought it was funny, but my crew realized this was the beginning of hypothermia (thinking it was funny was not a great sign) and rallied around me to keep me warm (there was no shelter with enough walls to keep the wind from whipping us). I recovered thanks to their efforts, and then we all had a long night of being soaking wet in a windstorm. There was no help for it, we’d have to trudge in our wet clothes. The baking sun the next day took care of that.
At the final leg of our trip, as we were preparing to climb the mountain peak, one of our Scouts got desperately ill due to a preexisting condition, aggravated by stress and heat. Fortunately, this didn’t happen while we were on the mountain trail (there is no easily accessible emergency rescue, as you either go up or down at that point), so we had to leave him at the last camp. It took eight hours before he made it back to the base camp’s infirmary; we missed him, but he was fine (and probably relieved).
In the end, we summited the Tooth of Time to see the sunrise. This was a personal triumph for me. I had tried to climb Tuckerman Ravine on the Appalachian Trail but got altitude sickness, so I was determined to make it this time, and I did. As I said to my wife, if I had to crawl up that mountain on my hands and knees, I would – and that final leg up the “scramble” of the Tooth of Time requires just that, in the dark.
Climbing that peak was a symbolic achievement too. It was a chance to celebrate several milestones too: a scout celebrated his 16th birthday during the hike; my son was celebrating his 18th (next week!), earned his third-degree black belt in Taekwondo, graduated from high school and theater classes, and was moving away to college.
It was absolutely worth it, but it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I’m so happy to have those memories with my son, and I have a new appreciation for the adventures and adventurers in my role-playing games. You can read the entire day-by-day account at EN World.
Each summer, I wish you all a chance to relax and recharge. Not this year. This year my advice is do hard things: while you have the vacation time, while you are physically able, while you have friends and family to do it. It will be hard, but it will be worth it, and you’ll appreciate the times you can relax and recharge all the more.
Sincerely,
Mike Tresca

Adam’s Educational Electrum
August 2025
Hello, and welcome to my column for the monthly CAR-PGa newsletter! For those readers out there who are educators, I am flattered, humbled, and grateful for the chance to share a modest trinket of treasure to help you on your instructional quests. This might be a gaming resource, a full out TTRPG, or a particular educator’s story.
Hello, and welcome to August! For some friends, like my colleagues north of me in Indiana, school has already started, and for others, you’re only a week or two away. I wish for you the best year ever.
On a side note, later this month I’ll be attending the Serious Play Conference in Rochester, New York (August 13-15), as well as speaking on a panel: “Adventures in TTRPG: Building Learning Worlds with Dice, Devices, and Dialogue.” If you can, come attend!
One of the options for the focus of my column is “a full out TTRPG.” How about fifty-one of them?
Roll for Learning: 51 Micro Tabletop Role-Playing Games to Use in the Classroom (Play Story Press/Lulu.com, 2024) is a book collection edited by Camilla Zamboni, Matthew Farber, and William Merchant. I bought it back in April, and I was impressed quantitatively and qualitatively by what is between the covers. While each RPG may be micro, the book is not, coming in at a whopping 554 pages (available in softcover or eBook formats). The book’s size aside, what’s really impressive is the ease you could actually play these with students in a classroom. There are three sections by age group (Ages 5 to 11, 11 to 15, and “15 and beyond”). Each section has the same three content categories of games: Social Emotional Learning (SEL); Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM); and Humanities. The materials required vary, but most only need paper, pencils, and six-sided dice. Game rules are explained over the course of only a handful of pages; the mechanics are meant to be light and easy to implement, and while some need a facilitator per group of students, many build in the capacity to be “gamemasterless.”
Some of the highlights include:
- “Happy Little Giraffes” by Trent Boyd (SEL, ages 5 to 11): “A light-hearted game based on healing anime (iyashikei), where you will take on the role of a giraffe, exploring your hobbies, helping out your friends, and managing your stress levels.”
- “Fur and Fitness” by Brendon Trombley (STEM, ages 5 to 11), where students learn about “natural selection and genetics” by playing “a population of a furry animal species.” Trombley also created “Mathemagicians vs. Monsters” (STEM, ages 11 to 15), where algebraic expressions are used as spells to defeat enemies.
- “Operation Mincemeat” by Deb Fuller (SEL, ages 11 to 15) “is based on the true story of Juan Pujol . . . who single-handedly created a fake spy ring and fed disinformation to the Germans during WWII,” and requires students to practice their communication and ELA skills.
- “Dewey Dilemma” by Susan Haarman (Humanities, ages 15 and beyond) “introduces education students to the foundational theory of philosopher John Dewey in a dynamic and applied way.”
Whether you play one of these TTRPGs as is, adapt it for your needs, or use them to inspire making your own, Roll for Learning can be a helpful addition to your classrooms from kindergarten to higher ed.
Until our next time together at the table,
Adam Watson
